Liverpool FC news: Masters of their own downfall! – Former midfielder Ray Houghton on talkSPORT
Ray Houghton has described Liverpool as the ‘masters of their own downfall’ after surrendering a two-goal lead to lose at Bournemouth .
The Reds were 3-1 up after 75 minutes of talkSPORT’s live commentary at the Vitality Stadium. But, in a bizarre turn of events, goals from Ryan Fraser, Steve Cook and Nathan Ake ensured the hosts would complete the turnaround, sealing a 4-3 victory.
It means Jurgen Klopp’s side have missed the chance to close the gap on leaders Chelsea to one point – as they lost their first match since August.
Former Liverpool midfielder Houghton, who was alongside Jim Proudfoot for talkSPORT, said: “Liverpool players – masters of their own downfall.
“I mean, the goals they gave away were so cheap and it should never have happened.
“[Look at the] Liverpool fans – they’ve left already, they cannot believe what they have witnessed in the last 14 minutes. Quite incredible.
“Credit to Bournemouth for getting themselves back into it, [it was a] good piece of management bringing on young Fraser. It was a throw of the dice: ‘Go on son, go show me what you can do.’
“He showed the Bournemouth public what he could do, because he was a huge influence in the goals they scored. Look at the Liverpool players coming off – shell-shocked, absolutely shell-shocked how they haven’t won that game.
“You’ve got to see it through for 90 minutes, not about what you do for 75, it’s about keeping your concentration for 90 minutes, they didn’t do it.”
