Pennsylvania has many universities that offer advanced training that prepares students for state certification as nurse practitioners (NP). The paths to this field include a 2-year (full-time) Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) and a 3-year (full-time) Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) program. Within these graduate degree programs, students can choose an area of concentration, such as psychiatric mental health, nursing education, neonatal, anesthesia or pediatric primary care. Supervised clinical experience is a requirement.

Some of the admission requirements include a resume, proof of prior clinical work, a competitive GPA, an essay and RN licensure. Schools may offer special attendance features such as part-time or full-time status and the ability to take some classes online.

Millersville University of Pennsylvania

Millersville University of Pennsylvania provides a family nurse practitioner master’s degree program. Students can complete the program on a part-time basis. Graduates are eligible to sit for the national certification exam. Accepted applicants into the degree program begin classes in the fall.

Based in University Park, the university has an M.S.N. degree program with three nurse practitioner concentrations. While the adult to elderly primary care program can be completed in three years of full-time study, the family practice option requires an additional semester. The D.N.P. program’s clinical experiences meet requirements of national certification agencies, such as the American Nurses Credential Center and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

The university, located in Villanova, offers a master’s degree nurse practitioner program and a D.N.P. program. M.S.N. degree program concentrations include adult to elderly care, family practice, and pediatric care. The D.N.P. program is only offered full-time.
